Differences between batch and tilting electric arc furnaces in white fused alumina smelting

The main smelting methods for white fused alumina are batch (fixed) furnace smelting and tilting furnace smelting. Both industrial processes essentially involve the electric melting and recrystallization of white corundum, but the different techniques result in distinct characteristics. As pink fused alumina (PFA) and ruby alumina (RA)'s smelting process is similar to that of white fused alumina, the difference in smelting also affects the characteristics of PFA and RA.

  • Material Processing: Batch furnaces process materials in discrete batches, while tilting furnaces can potentially allow for more continuous operation.

  • Production Scale: Batch furnaces are better suited for smaller-scale production, whereas tilting furnaces are more efficient for large-scale, high-volume production.

  • Efficiency: Tilting furnaces are generally more energy-efficient due to their ability to operate at a constant temperature, reducing the repeated heating and cooling cycles typical of batch furnaces.

  • Smelting Time per Batch: Batch furnaces often take almost 24 hours to smelt one batch, while tilting furnaces usually take 4-7 hours to smelt one batch.

  • Impurity Removal: Smelting of white corundum in fixed furnaces is more complete, allowing for the removal of bottom or cover parts containing impurities.

  • Toughness: Fixed furnace white corundum has better toughness.


JCT Abrasives owns 6 batch (fixed) arc furnaces, compared with tilting arc furnaces, white fused alumina and pink fused alumina from fixed furnaces have higher toughness, bulk density and hardness, and better high-temperature resistance and erosion resistance. For example, the Vickers hardness of F60# WFA from a fixed furnace is 2186.6HV0.2, while that from a tilting furnace is 2149.1HV0.2
